Types of Cloth Diapers

Chinese Prefolds (CPFs), Diaper Service Quality Prefolds (DSQs), or just "Prefolds":
These are flat diapers that are "prefolded" and sewn so that the middle third of the diaper has more layers to absorb where it is needed most. They take a little bit of practice to get used to, but are the cheapest way to go. And these get fluffier, softer and more absorbent with each washing. They are folded around the baby and since they do not have a waterproof layer, they are used under diaper covers or wraps. These can be pinned, used with a Snappi fastener, used as an insert in a pocket diaper, or just folded in thirds and layed inside a wrap.

Contoured Diapers:
Contoured diapers are used just like prefolds, however they are cut, layered and sewn so no folding is necessary. Just lay them in a wrap or diaper cover with or without the use of pins or Snappis.

Fitted Diapers:
Fitted diapers are used in place of prefolds or contours. They require a diaper cover or wrap, however they have elastic around the legs and waist and have either snaps or hook-and-loop fasteners. They are made to fit snug to the baby to hold messes in better.

All-in-Ones (AIOs):
All-in-One diapers are one piece and are the most similar to disposable diapers. They have elastic around the legs and many have elastic at the waist as well. While these are probably the most convienent, they can also be the most expensive of the cloth diapers. They're great for when you're going out or when Grandma is babysitting since they work just like disposables.

Pocket Diapers:
Pocket diapers are very similar to All-in-Ones, however instead of having the middle absorbent layer (the "insert") sewn inside the diaper, there is a pocket at the top of the waistline, in the back, for the insert to be placed and it may be removed for washing. This is great because it takes less time for them to dry since they are separate pieces. These diapers are very nice and versatile because you can stuff them with however much your baby needs during the day or nighttime.

Diaper Covers or Wraps:
Wraps or diaper covers are used over prefolds, fitted and contour diapers as the outer waterproof layer. They can be made of fleece, PUL (polyurethane laminate), wool or other cotton and polyester fabrics. They have elastic and either hook-and-loop fasteners or snaps.

Doublers & Liners:
Doublers are extra layers that can be added to any diapering system to add absorbency.
Liners are usually one layer of material (like fleece) that is placed inside the diaper next to baby's skin to keep them feeling dry.

Inserts:
Inserts are what you use inside pocket diapers.
